People Make you Happy

In every study of “Blue Zone” people - those who live in areas of the world with remarkable longevity - a common characteristic those people display is active relationships with a community of people. And in every study of what makes people happiest in life, quality of friendships always makes the list.

Turns out, quality time with the people we love fills our cup and restores our energy.

To busy leaders, often times having fun with friends can feel frivolous. Time with the people we enjoy easily gets pushed to the back burner when there are more productive things to do.

I noticed in myself that the more I experience “people problems” at work, the more my posture toward everyone became, “People are problems.” And it’s really hard to want to spend time with people when you believe they are just going to be another problem.

The truth is, we need time with the people who fill our soul. They humanize us. They see us. They help us right size our problems and remind us of who we are. We laugh more with others than we ever do on our own. They are a source of joy, acceptance, and strength.

So . . .

Text 3 people you want to connect with and invite them to grab lunch in the next 2 weeks.

Find 2 “drive time” people - friends you can call and chat with on your commute home from work - and call one today.

Set up a dinner this month with those friends you’ve been meaning to connect with.

You’ll be happier if you do.
